After sitting indoors at the desk for long hours, Americans crave a healthy house and healthy outdoor environments.
In his book, “The Great Good Place” sociologist Ray Oldenburg bemoans the demise of the small town gathering place like the German beer garden or English pub.
People could hangout or escape in good conversation with others they know. He says,
cities have lost their ‘Third Place’ (1st. home and 2nd. work) which are inclusive and where status is checked at the door.
Now hang outs are at a big box – a McDonaldized society with sameness and strangers. One must hurry over a meal so the owner can turn the crowd to make money.
Artificial noise drowns out the conversations rather than being a place to facilitate them. Or, each person is on their individual device rather than connecting in conversation.
Perhaps the new evolution of building communities around clean, beautiful green parks and open spaces will be the new ‘meet up’ place to rejuvenate.
In Beijing, hundreds of people gather in the parks every evening and Sundays to practice Qigong together or do line dancing to a boombox. Healthy people enjoy good inner feng shui.
Villagers in India dislike Western style shopping malls because they prefer the camaraderie of their night markets. Here they know everyone, can haggle over prices, and catch -up with the days events. The energy is ‘electric’.
