Modern Environmental Psychology is about what the ancients referred to as Feng Shui. The Wind (feng) & Water (shui) of space are metaphors for the flow of seen (water) and unseen (wind) Qi (energy) in the environment.
Like an old sailor adjusting the sails by the ‘feel’ of the natural elements, not by what the eye sees, you can wisely navigate the constantly shifting tides, winds, and currents of life.
It is how you ‘respond’ to change that matters! And, change is constant but many humans have difficulty releasing old stuff from the past in their surroundings, as well as their mind-set, in order to move ahead with the constant cycles of time.
The 3 Pillars of a Healthy Environment
Emotional balance for Mental and Physical Well-being: The foundation for successful habits/behaviors begins in the HOME. Therefore, the goal is to enhance the energy of the space to evoke constructive emotions. It is about your inner intentions for a meaningful life that matters and not about the size or glamour of the home and objects.
As adults, we often look back at what our parents did or said in the home, which can now set off unconscious triggers to both constructive and destructive emotional reactions.
Have you ever paid attention to what creates emotional triggers in your own home environment today? How does it affect you, your relationships, and how will it affect the children in a few years?
Through mindful awareness training of our thoughts, behaviors, and surrounding spaces, we can cultivate emotional balance within the home . Today more than ever, we need peaceful, calm, positive environments to support us in all of our endeavors
Natural Environments: Like a daisy requires sunlight to blossom, humans need it too. According to the study of biophilia. the healthiness of the surrounding soil, landscape, water, trees, mountains, animals, etc. all impact our emotional well being. You can easily bring forest bathing into your home for that necessary relaxation.
Structural Environment: The view from the windows and doors matters. Shapes of structures, hallways, room layouts matter. The proper function of each room and the placement of furniture and objects relative to the flow of air matters. Basic traditional designs fare much better for real living than some of the newer more egocentric designs for image.
Synchronicity with the real you: Just ask any architect how many battles they have arbitrated because of the childhood issues that were triggered when people design their own home. One of the clients would like to replicate or avoid something, but the other partner disagrees with it -this is usually based on unknown sub-conscious feelings implanted at an early age.
Knowing your ‘self” and ‘others’
is key to choosing spaces with constructive outcomes for you and your family.
